Tshwane South Africa Accor Hotel
In April, AccorHotels acquired South Africa's Mantis Group, which operates and lodges hotels worldwide, as well as a number of hotels in the US, Canada and Europe. The PAs have targeted rivals like Radisson, which is seeking to capitalize on a multibillion-dollar war chest to push its global expansion plans.
Initially, the merged entity will take the name Ennismore and consist of Accor Hotels SA, Mantis Group and the South African Hotel and Restaurant Association. The fund will invest in up to 40 hotels in South Africa with the aim of expanding and operating 114 hotels under brands such as Ibis, Novotel and Pullman, the company said.
Innismore, the company's flagship brand in South Africa, is being rebranded as Accor Hotels SA, Mantis Group and South African Hotel and Restaurant Association (SAB).
Accor S.A. is headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, and is the second largest hotel operator in the world and one of the ten largest hotel operators in the United States. It is a member of the Accor Group, a global group of hotels, restaurants and hospitality companies with more than 1200 hotels and restaurants in over 100 countries.
Mark Willis, who was appointed the company's Middle East and Africa chief this month, told Reuters Accor was looking for a new hotel in the North African market, with 70 percent of existing properties in the North African market. The French group announced in July that it had teamed up with the sovereign wealth fund's hospitality arm, the African Development Bank (ADB), to create the fund to invest in Africa.
We have a number of deals in key destinations to complete, "he said, adding that he believed there was strong demand for new hotels in the North African market, particularly in South Africa. Accor's establishment of a North African location, Willis said, should serve as a springboard for expansion, as the same customers travel and do business across the continent. While Willis accepted that Radisson was doing a great job in Africa, he said Accors could not compete with the big hotel chains that are increasingly entering African markets. As for accessories, only the bare minimum is included: the space has shrunk, ATMs have been set up and few of the usual amenities such as air conditioning are included.
In the mid-1990s, Accor shifted its interests to managing more luxury and premium brands. In 2007 Pullman was refounded, the serviced apartment brand Adagio was introduced and a lightweight model was introduced, focusing on high-end hotels, luxury apartments and luxury restaurants. On November 24, 2020, she announced that she has taken over the management of the luxury brands Marriott International and Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. Also on the same day, accor announced that it had entered into an agreement to create a major global marketing lifestyle operator to focus on fast-growing segments of the industry.
Hyatt Hotels & Resorts (H & N) plans six new hotels in Africa by 2020, and Hilton Worldwide Holdings (HLT-N) will spend $50 million to finance expansion, with a total investment of $100 million over five years.
